Lower Manhattan is not just a place where employees work and tourists visit. We need a problem solver in the City Council who understands that we live in New York’s fastest growing residential area.

We need more schools, better parks, less traffic, safer neighborhoods, affordable housing and more social services. Our district is incredibly diverse, and we need a representative who will listen to all of our neighbors and work for real solutions.

Thank you for taking the time to visit this page and
thank you for considering my candidacy!

We’re very pleased to announce that Rocky Chin, civil rights attorney and 2001 candidate for City Council District 1, has given us his support:

September 13, 2009

Dear Neighbor,

Of the 4 challengers to Councilman Alan Gerson on September 15th, Jin “PJ” Kim stands out as the candidate who has the most promise in bringing a fresh approach and effective leadership to our district.

At each of the candidate forums, Jin “PJ” Kim has provided thoughtful, intelligent responses and presented a progressive vision for making Lower Manhattan a more livable residential community. He has avoided pandering to different audiences or launching personal attacks. His campaign obtained more signatures on its petitions than any other challenger and he has garnered the endorsement of The New York Times, the NY Press, DC 37 - the City’s largest public employee union, Citizens Union – the City’s premier good government reform organization, the Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club - a citywide progressive LGBT organization, and Eddie Chiu - a major Chinatown community leader.

Last year, I worked hard to elect Dan Squadon to the NYS Senate (District 25). He defeated an incumbent who had been in the Senate for 30 years. Dan Squadron is now making waves and drawing positive notices in Albany. I mention Dan’s election, because I was disappointed that Margaret – who is making her 4th run for the council – supported a do-nothing and mediocre incumbent, and not Squadron. So for all her claims to be a candidate for change, her practice just last year was to be a candidate who supported the status quo.

Alan and the other 3 candidates challenging him – Chin, Gleason & Gregory – don’t offer voters a choice for real change. They are all decent individuals, but District 1 deserves more. I applaud Jin “PJ” Kim for his success in winning his influential endorsements but more importantly, his commitment to fight for all the neighborhoods of the district – from Chinatown to TriBeCa, the Lower East Side to Battery Park City, and Greenwich Village to Greenwich Street South.

I encourage my friends and neighbors to vote for him on Tuesday, 9/15.

Rocky Chin

A big “thank you!” to the League of Women Voters!

One of the oldest and most respected civic organizations in New York – the League of Women Voters – hosted a lively debate on September 2nd.

I was pleased to have another opportunity to talk about why government reform is so important – too many citizens do not have faith that the current City Council is ethical enough to handle the responsibility of running one of the most diverse cities in the world. One City Council member has already resigned because of improper allocations of discretionary funds and it is likely that many other members will be exposed as investigations continue.

Citizens Union, the most respected government reform organization, has designated me as their preferred candidate in this race.

During the debate, I stayed focused on the issues and not on personal attacks. I stated that you can tell a lot about a candidate by the way they run their campaign, and I am extremely proud of the way I have conducted mine.

It’s simple: I’ll look for solutions and listen to what you have to say, rather than wasting time and alienating constituents with petty arguments.

Civil and Responsive: That’s the way I want to help lead, govern, and represent the people of Lower Manhattan.

Plus 3 Pieces of Big News

Dear friends,

We are roaring into the home stretch of this campaign, and I’m happy to announce three exciting developments:

We filed 5,500 signatures to get on the ballot. New York State Election Law requires 900. Ours was six times the number needed and the highest number of any of the challengers in this race. Here are two short video clips: http://www.pjkim.com/videos-from-filing-day

The first major labor union endorsement was made in this race – and we won it! DC 37 is the largest municipal workers’ union in NYC and we were one of only 4 challengers they endorsed out of 51 races.

We have the most cash-on-hand of any of the campaigns (double what the incumbent has) and will also soon be receiving the maximum amount of public matching funds of $88,550.

We are now focused on reaching voters with our message. I need your help to reach them. The math is very simple. We will win, if each of you can introduce me to 10 of your friends who are registered Democrats in Lower Manhattan and if you can commit to follow up with them so they vote for us on September 15. That’s it.

Here’s how you can help:

Think of 10 friends who live in District 1 who may be registered Democrats (here’s a handy map with zip codes). Email their names to my campaign coordinator Mary Simon (Mary@PJKim.com). We’ll check to confirm whether they are eligible to vote for us on September 15.

Introduce us to them via email (we can send a template) so that we can follow up with them and answer any questions they may have about specific issues. Don’t hesitate to share my campaign’s number (646-452-9484) and e-mail (PJ@PJKIM.Com).

Follow up with them in the days leading up to election day to let them know their voting location (which we will send you) and then do a final reminder on election day.

If you can do this, we will win.

Thank you so much for your help!

-PJ
