a. What does the New York City Council do?
The New York City Council is the lawmaking body for the City. It has 51 members from 51 council districts throughout the five boroughs. The Council serves as balance of power against the Mayor, monitors performance of city agencies and makes land use decisions as well as legislating on a variety of other issues. The City Council also has sole responsibility for approving the city budget.
b. Who can vote in the Democratic Primary on September 15?
Only registered Democrats who live in District 1. Unfortunately, if you did not declare party affiliation or are registered as a Republican or Independent you are not eligible to vote. If you are currently unregistered to vote in District 1, you have until August 21, 2009, to register and declare your party affiliation as a Democrat to vote on September 15.
